Reflecting on the Pros and Cons of Farm Raised Fish:

The on going controversy of the Pros and Cons behind the issue of "Farm Raised" fish vs. "Ocean" fish, or from the "Wild" fish (natural streams, oceans, lakes, etc...)!

Are we able to specify which is healthier, environmentally safe, uncontaminated, mercury free, more economical, wild, fresh, consumable, harmful to our health, color additives, cancer, mass production, human consumption, etc........These issues are controversial and vast. Money seems to always be the culprit of all evil!

Mass production to accommodate consumer demands are the prime reason behind the "Farm Raising" fish industry! Health has played a secondary role thus far. Awareness is required for the necessary concern of the effects that are contributing to our physical health. Some say "Farm Raised" fish is safer, and others state it is not, for it has high toxins. When it comes to receiving an adequate healthy dose of vitamins and nutrients, it is best derived from natural resources, like the oceans, natural streams, natural lakes, etc.......

Fresh Fish Markets Taken Over By The Farm Raised Fish Industry!

Quite simply the fresh fish market has been taken over by the "farmed fish industry"! Why you ask yourselves? Well, look at the produce markets like Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions, Ralphs, even Mother's Market, Trader Joes. How often do you see real "fresh ocean fish" available, hardly ever, and if so, the price is outrageous.

Fresh fish is slowly dwindling, and almost becoming something of the past. You walk-up to the sea food counter in the markets, and almost every fish displayed for purchase is farm raised, even the Shrimp, Scallops, Prawns, etc....They say "Fresh Fish of the Day" if weather permitting. For instance, "Fresh Atlantic Salomon with color added, farm raised".....etc....What does the weather have to do with it, if it is farm raised? Rather of an irony, don't you think!

Once in awhile you will have the privilege of possibly acquiring "fresh fish". If you are lucky enough, you will have the acquaintance of purchasing "fresh fish" from Alaska when it is feasible, or weather permitting!

Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found that most of the fish we eat contains significantly more selenium than mercury. Seafood that contains more mercury (Hg) than selenium (Se) includes pilot whale, tarpon, marlin,

Vitamins and Nutrients

Fish is the best source for enriching your diet with Omega 3 vitamins, and nutrients. In combating heart disease and cholesterol, evidence has been documented for its importance in adding fish dishes, at least twice a week, to maximize a healthy and well rounded regime.

Health alerts should be taken seriously, because of contamination with high degrees of mercury that might have substantial harm to our organs, especially to children, and the elderly.

Some disclaimers do exaggerate the issue with mercury found in fish. To some degree caution should be taken, but scientists found fresh fish have a certain nutrient "selenium" which eliminates, or neutralizes the mercury found in fish, resulting to be less harmful than it has been determined. Thus acts as a magnet, and a protective shield against excessive mercury consumption, hence not to be classified as "dangerous".

Hackers, and piracy has add much concern to the effects of the mass amounts of fish and sea animals that have been caught, and processed as food for "farm raised fish, poultry, pigs, etc..". This form of "food" is a live cause of viruses, and cancer producer for humans. On the other hand, poor management of "farm raised facilities" can be highly harmful to our health, and extremely toxic. Not enough circulation and monitoring is always attained in confined, and unregulated facilities as breeding grounds for growing mature fish for sell, and human consumption.

Hi Randa! I am not a fish eater, unless it's crab cakes. It's been forever since I've been to a fish hatchery, but I remember it being one of the most interesting places I've visited.

This is interesting information!
